User posted a clip of Zoey explaining to Elmo that Rocco "had to go to the bathroom" on January 5th, gaining over 14,000 retweets and 82,000 likes in less than 24 hours (shown below, top). Other users shared various clips of Elmo expressing his exasperation with Rocco following the viral video in early January 2022. User wrote it was "classic elmo," gaining over 190 retweets and 4,100 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right). For example, on January 5th, 2022, Twitter user posted, "Please help me, I have been laughing at how much Elmo hates a rock all morning. The clip was widely shared on social media shortly after, as many users saw it for the first time and were surprised at how strongly Elmo reacted to Rocco. At his wit's end, Elmo proceeds to unload on Zoey, insisting that Rocco is not alive. This comes to a head in a scene in which Elmo wants an oatmeal raisin cookie (his favorite), but Zoey insists Rocco wants it. This culminated in Episode 4,077, aired five years later, which finds Elmo struggling to entertain Zoey's imaginary friend. Over the following years, Elmo would regularly express exasperation with the character, often refusing to accept Zoey's insistence that Rocco was anything more than a regular rock.
On September 15th, 2015, LiveJournal user blankstare published a version of the gif with the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants licking Elmo (shown below).Zoey's pet rock, Rocco, was first introduced on Sesame Street on January 7th, 1999, in episode 3,809. As of May 2018, the video (shown below, right) received more than 13,000 views. Over a year later, on July 24th, 2015, YouTuber Bretty Clough published a video of the gif. It only received 837 notes, but later reposts from the same Tumblr received over 300,000 notes. On February 14, 2014, Tumblr user Gnarville posted an animated gif of the Elmo picture against a flaming background titled "All hail Hellmo, our dark lord of the internet". On June 28th, 2013, Tumblr user teruteru666 reblogged the image from and added the comment "rise." Several years later, on October 5th, 2015, the post received more than 250,000 notes in five years.
